Marcialonga
February 5, 2006
This year's Marcialonga took place on January 29. Until Friday we had sunny and cold weather in the area. On Friday and Saturday heavy snowfalls totaling 40 cm produced the closing of airports and roads in Northern Italy. But not the cancellation of Marcialonga, of course! The organizers managed to make miraculously good tracks and everything including the transports worked perfectly. On the race day, Sunday, the temperature approached zero degrees C which created a dilemma for waxing.
The last skier to reach Cavalese at the end of the 70 km race was an Italian, Orfeo Paccagnella, 66 years, in a time of 10.12.35. He got the laurel crown which had already been carried by the winner some 8 hours earlier.
Another happy skier was David Haugstad from Chicago with a time of 9.08.00. He beat by 19 km his previous longest race which was a Birkie. The marvelous Marcialonga public called him by name several times along the course. David's time ratio, the ratio between his time and the winner's time (3.24.48) was 2.68.
Judy Barnes and Colin Addison from Australia finished hand in hand in 8.28.06.
