Classic finishNot enough snow in Lienz this year but more than enough for ideal conditions in Obertilliach where both the Classic and Freestyle races were held, both 42k long distance, plus 20k short race on Sunday.

The races started at the ski stadium in Obertilliach at about 1400 meters altitude. There is a large sloping field stretching down from the village. The planners had managed to create the first 20 km of the course as a long serpentine that stretched back and forth as the skiers worked themselves down towards Untertilliach. The course continued down the valley and then crossed the river and continued up the valley after about 25 km. The uphill was long, about 10 km, and gradual except for the last kilometer where it got steep and the altitude was well above the stadium. The last 5 km was a nice downhill for tired skiers into the stadium.

Saturday’s classic race started with partly cloudy skies, almost no wind and a temperature about -1C. The tracks were very well prepared, 4 lanes wide for the first 20k of the serpentine course through the fields. This gave plenty of time for the competitors to spread out before the course narrowed to 2 lanes for the long climb and the last downhill to the finish. There were 576 finishers, an increase of over 30% from the last race in 2006. The winning time was 1:54:29.
