La Transjurassienne in 2008
March 1, 2008
Large portions of the normal Transjurassienne course were completely without snow this year however the organisers were able to hold all scheduled events on an alternate course starting at the usual location in Lamoura and ending in Premanon. Both of the long distance events were 50k. Snow cover was surprisingly good. The course was quite challenging with over 900 meters of climbing and several long, fast downhill sections which included some sharp twists and turns.
The Saturday classic race started at 10am with clear skies, no wind and the temperature about -5C. The tracks were hard and glazed. They held up well for the first 2 hours until the temperature rose above 0C and the strong sun forced some skiers to rewax with warmer klister. 519 skiers finished the 50k race, the winning time was 2:08:22. 177 skiers finished the 25k race, the winning time was 1:10:09
The course was well prepared for Sunday’s skating events. The weather was the same as the previous day. The race started in waves beginning at 9am. There was a much larger number of participants than on Saturday. Some of the downhill sections became quite icy and difficult to negotiate resulting in numerous crashes. The snow was fast, the winning time was 1:49:48. 2693 skiers finished.
The finishing area was very well organised with an excellent ski check and food serving system. Bus transport from the finish was confusing and disorganised on Saturday, much improved on Sunday.
